Science and collaboration
Science is becoming more and more collaborative. The iconic images of Galileo, Newton or Einstein as lone scientists have been mostly replaced by the gigantic projects of the human genome or CERN LHC experiments.
Science has always been collaborative to some extent as the correspondence and interactions with fellow scientists attest but the complexity, interdisciplinarity and consequently funding requirements of today have created a new form of scientific research with expanding teams requiring a more formal management.
In practice, scholars most often work in groups: their institutional lab, permanent of ad hoc groups of collaborators on a given topic, institutional transversal groups like ERC, NSF Grants, Chairs, ANR. Also, a scientific document absolutely needs to be proofed by a fresh eye. The author can re-read 10 times his document and will still miss typos and maybe also erroneous statement. Therefore, a quick and minimal review by trusted people within your group is at very least necessary.
The group logic in a private environment
Zanadu is structured around user defined Groups of scientists. As a Zanadu user, you may belong to an unlimited number of Groups which correspond to the teams you work with. Within a Group, you can elaborate your work either independently or with co-authors within the Group, in your own private workspace. When your research document has reached a satisfactory state, your may require a review by one of the Group trusted referees. Once it has been approved your work can be disseminated in the shared workspace of the Group.
The interaction process between co-authors then between an author or authors and the reviewer is performed by exchanging notes, comments and answers on the executable document which trigger automatic notification to those concerned within Zanadu as well as by email if required. The history of these conversations is archived and can be hidden once an agreement has been reached. The status of a notebook evolves from WIP (Work In Progress), Review Pending, Under Review to the final Approved state, which enables a clear picture of the research production pipeline.
The ease of collaboration, of interaction and a private environment to work in team, make Zanadu the perfect place where R&D departments, private consultants and applied researchers can develop their projects. Thanks to Group logic, review process and report generation, private companies find in Zanadu a unique tool to enhance the interaction between their partners. Privacy levels can be setted according to the needs of each Group.
Further downstream, approved notebooks can be submitted for publication, when deemed relevant, in a Channel where they become accessible to selected audiences or the general public.
